* The Chemically Enhanced Comedy of Brian Lee *
            George Carlin: 1937-2008

When I was about 8 years old, my sister won a contest at her high
school.  The prize was an album called "Take Offs and Put On" by a guy
named George Carlin.  That album (big vinyl disc played on a "record
player") was recorded in 1967...it was Georges' first album.  My sister,
having no idea who he was, was nice enough to give the album to
me...and along with my Steve Martin album...I had quite the collection
going.

Back then, George used to work clean.  He was the quintessential
hippie.  Sure he made some drug references, but he never cussed and
was always funny.  It was not a "stand-up" album.  He did characters,
skits, fake news casts...and it was WAY ahead of its time.

After seeing Lenny Bruce perform live, George knew there were bigger
and better things in store for him.  His act eventually became what
people most know him for now.....picking apart the English language,
bashing authority, pointing out everyone's' idiosyncrasies, and of
course, finding a "place for his stuff".

Watching him evolve and adapt over the past 50 years has been
amazing.  In a business where acts come and go, he managed to stay
current and topical.  He covered every genre of comedy.  His ability to
adjust his act to stay with the times was uncanny.  Here's another way
to look at it...if Eric Clapton did stand up comedy, he would BE George
Carlin.

I looked up "Take Offs and Put Ons" on the internet.  It is no longer
manufactured, so I don't know if you can find it.  For a recording that is
47 years old, it is still one of the funniest things I have ever heard.  If you
have the opportunity, buy it, download it, ebay it, whatever...just get it!

I want  to thank everyone who called and emailed me when they found
out about the passing of George Carlin.  Though I never met him, I still
feel a great loss.  Thank you, George, for the influence you had on me all
those years ago.

The world is definitely a less-funny place today.  George, you will be
missed.

Till next time......drinks are on me,
